Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Can you pay for a recommendation? Understand the difference between an ad and an AI answer. Editorial graphic explaining the article topic.

Short answer

No. You can't pay to be the business ChatGPT or Claude recommends. OpenAI sells labeled ads in ChatGPT, shown below the answer, but says advertisers can't shape its answers. Anthropic says Claude will stay ad-free. xAI hasn't published an ads policy for Grok. Google's ads in AI Overviews are paid placements, not a spot in the answer.

In ChatGPT, you can buy the ad below the answer, not the answer. OpenAI says advertisers can't shape answers; Anthropic says Claude stays ad-free.
Paid ads in ChatGPT are a separate, labeled unit; the business an assistant recommends isn't for sale.

How do ads in ChatGPT work?

They're a separate, labeled unit below the answer. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 02/09/2026 for "logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers." It says ads are "clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer."

Per OpenAI's advertiser help pages:

  • Ads appear below responses, with the advertiser's name, icon, title, copy, landing page, and image.
  • Billing is by impressions or valid clicks, in a "relevance-weighted, second-price auction."
  • When several ads qualify, OpenAI weighs "relevance and advertiser bids."
  • Advertisers sign up through OpenAI's Ads Manager.

A drawn sample, not a screenshot: the chat answer stays on top, and the paid unit sits below it with its own label.
Per OpenAI, ads in ChatGPT are a separate unit below the answer.

Every ad needs a landing page, and OpenAI's OAI-AdsBot visits it to check policy and relevance. That page has to be worth paying traffic to: Websites.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

Only part of ChatGPT's users. OpenAI says there are no ads for Plus, Pro, or any Business plan, or for accounts identified as under 18. When it announced the plan on 01/16/2026, it said ads would not appear near sensitive or regulated topics, naming health and mental health among its examples.

Do ChatGPT ads change the answer?

OpenAI says no. Its help center: "Do ads influence the answers ChatGPT gives me? No. ... advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." One of its stated principles is "Answer independence: Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you."

For organic results, OpenAI says ChatGPT search "ranks search results using multiple factors" and "placement is not guaranteed." More on where ChatGPT, Claude and Grok get local business info.

Can you pay Claude to recommend you?

No. On 02/04/2026 Anthropic said "Claude will remain ad-free." It added that users "won't see 'sponsored' links adjacent to their conversations with Claude," and that Claude's responses won't "be influenced by advertisers or include third-party product placements our users did not ask for."

Can you pay Grok to recommend you?

Not today, as far as anything xAI or X has published. There's no first-party policy on ads or paid placement in Grok's answers. On 02/01/2026, X's @XBusiness account posted "Interested in advertising on Grok?" with no details. In 08/2025, news outlets reported Elon Musk telling advertisers X would let marketers "pay to appear in suggestions" from Grok, but no format, labeling or launch has been documented since.

Can you pay to show up in Google AI Overviews?

You can pay for an ad near or inside one, not for a spot in the AI-written answer. Google says "ads are eligible to be shown above, below or within AI Overviews on Search," and the organic sources come from its "core Search ranking and quality systems." For the map results, Google says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."

How do they compare?

Four cards: ChatGPT ads in test since 02/09/2026, not changing answers; Claude ad-free; Grok no published policy; Google ads around AI Overviews.

What about agencies promising guaranteed AI recommendations?

Be skeptical. OpenAI says organic placement "is not guaranteed" and that ads don't influence answers. Google says you can't pay for a better local ranking. If someone guarantees ChatGPT will name your business, ask them how, in writing, and compare the answer with what an AI visibility audit checks.

Quote from the post: If someone guarantees ChatGPT will name your business, ask them how, in writing. OpenAI says organic placement is not guaranteed.
The platforms won't promise organic placement, so a guarantee from anyone else needs an explanation you can keep.

When are ads the better choice?

When you need calls this month and can afford to pay per click. Ads are a fair, honest way to show up fast, and nothing here argues against them. The tradeoff: they stop when you stop paying, and on ChatGPT they reach only Free and Go users.

Earning the mention in the answer itself is slower and has no guarantee. That work has names: SEO for Google's regular results, and AEO and GEO for answer engines and AI tools like ChatGPT (what each one means). It rests on crawler access, accurate listings, real reviews within platform rules, and plain-text pages, the groundwork of SEO, AEO and GEO work that earns the mention. Many businesses will want both.

Two lists: ads show up fast but stop when you stop paying; earning the mention rests on crawlers, listings, reviews and plain text, with no guarantee.

How 3Fold Labs helps

I work on the unpaid side of this, as SEO, AEO and GEO: clear service pages, crawler access, and business details that match across your site and listings. It's the same groundwork as how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business, and reviews play their part too (how Google reviews affect AI recommendations). I can't promise any assistant will name you. If you run ads as well, the landing page still has to earn the call.

If you want the unpaid side handled, here's my Getting found on Google and in AI answers.

FAQ

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

It's an auction, so there's no fixed price. Check OpenAI's advertiser help pages for current bid guidance before you budget.

Can I pay to be in Google's map pack?

Not organically. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads are a separate, paid product.

Will ChatGPT ads show to everyone?

No. Per OpenAI, not to Plus, Pro, or Business users, and not to accounts identified as under 18.

Is advertising on ChatGPT worth it for a contractor?

It's too new for me to say, and I have no results to point to. Test small, with a strong landing page, and measure calls.
