How long does it take for AI assistants to start mentioning a business?

Short answer
Nobody can promise a timeline for when AI assistants will mention a business. OpenAI, Google and Bing each say crawling, indexing and inclusion aren't guaranteed. Anthropic and xAI publish no timing at all. The only durations they publish cover crawling and settings changes, from hours to months, not mentions. Anyone quoting you a date is guessing.

What has to happen before an AI assistant can mention you?
Three steps, and each one can stall:
- First, crawled. A search engine's bot visits your page.
- Then, indexed. The search engine stores it and can show it.
- Last, chosen. For a specific question, the assistant picks your business or page to mention.

Being chosen depends on the question someone asks.
Google describes Search as three stages, crawling, indexing, and serving, and says "not all pages make it through each stage." Being chosen depends on the question someone asks, so even an indexed business won't show up for every search.
A site crawlers can actually read is step one: Websites.
What do OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Google say about timing?
Here is what each company publishes. Quoted text is in the company's own words:

The 24-hour figure is about robots.txt settings, not about when you get mentioned (more on why ChatGPT doesn't mention your business). Google also says "you likely want to wait a few weeks to assess whether your work had beneficial effects in Google Search results."
Why can ChatGPT know about you one day and not the next?
Because it answers in two different ways. OpenAI says that without search, "responses are based on what the model has learned during training," up to a knowledge cutoff. With search on, ChatGPT can look up current pages, and it "sometimes partners with other search providers."
A new business can realistically show up only through the search path in the near term. No company publishes when a future training cutoff will include any given site. And search answers vary by question, so you can appear one day and not the next.

What can you do to avoid slowing it down?
Remove the things that block or confuse crawlers:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, Googlebot and Bingbot in robots.txt and at your host or firewall (more on where ChatGPT, Claude and Grok get local business info). OpenAI says "to make a website eligible for inclusion, allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site."
- Submit an XML sitemap. Bing says sitemaps "are typically read once per day," but also that "sitemaps do not guarantee visibility."
- Use IndexNow if your site supports it. IndexNow.org says submitting a URL "does not guarantee immediate indexing."
- Link your pages to each other.
- Verify your Google Business Profile and keep your name, phone, and service area the same everywhere.

Remove the things that block or confuse crawlers.
Don't pay to request recrawls over and over. Google says requesting the same URL multiple times "won't get it crawled any faster," and it "doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, or rank it higher." Making your business easy for search engines and AI tools to find.
Should you trust anyone who promises AI mentions by a date?
No. Not even the companies that run these tools will promise that. Some vendors publish their own timing tests. They're small and run on sites that aren't local businesses, and some AI summaries already repeat their numbers as if they were general facts. Results vary, and none of them is a promise.
How do you check whether it's working?
Use the tools that report indexing. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools show whether your pages are indexed. Asking ChatGPT, Claude or Grok about your business is a useful spot check, not a measurement, because answers change from run to run (more on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business).
How 3Fold Labs helps
When I start on a site, I check the basics first: whether crawlers can reach it, whether your listings match, and whether your key pages are indexed. Special files aren't on that list (whether llms.txt helps with ChatGPT). It's ordinary SEO, AEO and GEO work (SEO vs AEO vs GEO), and none of it comes with a timeline anyone can promise.

FAQ
How long until Google indexes my new page?
Google says crawling after a request "can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks," and indexing isn't guaranteed.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT after launching a new website?
OpenAI doesn't publish a timeline. Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site; OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register.
Can I speed it up by paying someone?
Not for crawling or ranking on Google, which says it doesn't accept payment for either. Ads are a separate product.
I fixed wrong information on my site. When will AI tools show the fix?
There's no published timeline. Fix it on your site and your listings, then spot-check over the following weeks.
