Website builder vs custom website: what does each cost over three years?

"Count three years before picking a builder." over an open monthly planner, with two cards comparing this year, next year and the year after: what a website builder keeps charging for, and what a custom build costs. Line items only, no prices.

Short answer

For a simple site, a builder usually costs less over three years. At list prices checked 10/20/2026, Wix and Squarespace plans plus a domain total $645 to $1,437. GoDaddy starts lower, then renews higher. A custom site adds a build fee, hosting, and often a care plan. Its payoff is ownership and control, not savings.

Which one costs less over three years?

On listed prices alone, a builder usually costs less over three years. The math below shows why. A custom site has a one-time build fee plus its own running costs, and those running costs are often left out of the comparisons you'll find online (more on what a contractor website costs). The case for custom rests on what the money buys, not on a lower total.

What do Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy cost over three years?

Example only. List prices as checked on 10/20/2026. Not a quote. Your plan, add-ons, and renewal terms will change the totals. To keep options equal, every row uses the same domain: a .com from Porkbun at $11.08 a year, or $33.24 over three years.

Where a vendor doesn't publish a renewal price, the table assumes the listed price continues. GoDaddy does publish one. Its Airo builder page lists Starter at $9.99 a month and Professional at $24.99 a month, billed for the first 1-year term, then auto-renewing at $179.88 and $443.88 a year (checked 10/20/2026). So Starter is $119.88 + $179.88 + $179.88 = $479.64, plus the $33.24 domain = $512.88. Professional is $299.88 + $443.88 + $443.88 = $1,187.64, plus $33.24 = $1,220.88. GoDaddy's older Websites + Marketing plan page is still online, but its main builder page now sells the Airo plans.

That's the renewal trap: compare year two, not just year one (more on the ongoing costs of a business website).

What does a custom site cost to run after it's built?

A custom site's three-year cost is: build fee + hosting + domain + care plan.

Formula: build fee, plus hosting (Netlify Personal, $108.00 a year), plus domain (Porkbun, $11.08 a year), plus an optional care plan.

For market context only (not any one provider's price): Lindo.ai's 2026 agency data puts the median 5-page small business site at $3,850 and the median care plan at $249 a month. 99creatix found a median WordPress care plan of $89 a month among 3 providers that publish prices. Over 36 months, $89 a month is $3,204 and $249 a month is $8,964.

How do you compare the two fairly?

Use the full formula on both sides. A custom site is cheaper over three years than a builder plan only if the build fee, plus 36 months of any care plan, plus hosting, plus domain comes to less than that plan's three-year total (more on what a care plan costs).

Example: Wix Business with a domain is $1,437.24 over three years. A custom site on Netlify Personal with the same domain has $357.24 in running costs, so the build fee plus any care plan would have to come in under $1,080.00 to win on price. At the market figures above, that's unlikely.

Example: Wix Business with a domain, $1,437.24 over three years, vs $357.24 to run a custom site. Build fee plus care must stay under $1,080.00.

Watch for break-even math elsewhere that divides a build fee by a builder's monthly price and stops there. It leaves out the custom site's own hosting, domain, and care.

What costs don't show up in the table?

  • Your time. Building and updating a builder site yourself takes hours you could spend on jobs. It's real but varies too much to price here.
  • Add-on apps. Booking, reviews, or form tools sold separately on a builder. Their prices aren't in the table.
  • Leaving. Wix says a Wix site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers." If you leave, you rebuild, and that cost lands whenever you go.
  • Year four and beyond. Builders keep charging the plan fee (see Wix vs Squarespace vs GoDaddy vs custom). A custom site keeps charging hosting, domain, and any care plan, but the build fee doesn't repeat.

These costs are real, but they don't show up in the price table above.
Count them before you compare totals.

When does paying more for custom make sense anyway?

When the money buys something a builder can't:

  • You own the site and choose the host, so you never have to rebuild just to leave.
  • Full control over service pages, town pages, and structured data.
  • Forms tied to your CRM or booking tool, follow-up texts, or a customer portal.

When is a custom site not the right fit?

When you mainly want the lowest cost. For a few-page site you'll edit yourself, a builder is cheaper over three years at these list prices, and it's the honest choice. It's also the wrong fit if nobody will maintain the custom site after launch, or if your bundled Jobber or Housecall Pro site already covers what you need.

How 3Fold Labs helps

I scope and quote each site before work starts, so you can run it through the same three-year view this post uses: the build fee plus the running costs. I don't publish a standard price, because pages, content and integrations change the job. A builder plan can still come out ahead, and the table above shows when.

Here's what goes into custom websites for service businesses.

FAQ

Is Wix cheaper than paying for a website?

Over three years, at list prices, usually yes for a simple site. Check the renewal price before you commit.

What does Squarespace cost after the first year?

Squarespace lists $19 to $99 a month on annual billing. It doesn't publish a separate renewal rate on its pricing page, and the free domain renews at its standard rate after year one.

Why did my GoDaddy renewal go up?

GoDaddy's Airo plans show a discounted price for the first 1-year term. Its builder page lists Starter auto-renewing at $179.88 a year and Professional at $443.88 (checked 10/20/2026). If you're on a classic Websites + Marketing plan, The Builder Handbook's earlier record shows Basic renewing at $16.99 a month and Premium at $29.99. Read the renewal line in your cart before paying.

How long until a custom site pays for itself?

On price alone, it may not. Run the formula above with your real quote and running costs.
