GoDaddy Website Builder vs a custom website: which is better for a contractor?

GoDaddy builder or custom site? Simple setup, heavier requirements and what you can move later. Editorial graphic explaining the article topic.

Short answer

The GoDaddy builder is a reasonable choice for a simple, low-cost site next to your GoDaddy domain and email, with a contact form and estimate booking. Custom fits heavier booking, full SEO control, integrations, or a site you own and can move. Check which GoDaddy builder you have first.I build custom sites, so weigh my bias.

Which "GoDaddy Website Builder" do you have?

There are two, and most reviews blur them:

  • Websites + Marketing is the older template editor. GoDaddy's help center documents it in detail.
  • Airo AI Builder is newer and chat-based: you describe the site and the AI builds it. GoDaddy's marketing pages now lead with it.
Two GoDaddy builders: Websites + Marketing, the older template editor, and Airo AI Builder, newer and chat-based.
GoDaddy sells two different builders, and what applies to you depends on which one you're on.

GoDaddy's main builder page now sells Airo plans. Its older Websites + Marketing plan page is still online. If you already have one, your plan and renewal date are in your GoDaddy account.

GoDaddy's help center has an article called "Which GoDaddy website builder do I have?" that tells them apart. What follows depends on which one you're on.

When is the GoDaddy builder enough for a contractor?

It's a fair choice if:

  • Your domain and email are already at GoDaddy and you want everything in one account
  • You need a few pages, a contact form, and click-to-call
  • You take a modest number of estimate bookings
  • You'll update the site yourself

GoDaddy's contact form supports a destination email, custom fields, and attachments, which covers "send us a photo of the problem." Its Online Appointments tool lets you set payment to "Custom" text such as "Call for estimate," and set the meeting location as the customer's location. That's a decent fit for how contractors actually book.

The booking cap. GoDaddy says "Online Appointments currently supports a total of 80 appointments and 5 different categories. Past appointments count towards the total, but you can remove them as needed."

For a contractor taking a few estimate requests a week, that's workable if you clear old appointments. For a busy shop with several crews and service types, five categories and an 80-appointment total will feel tight.

GoDaddy quote: Online Appointments supports 80 appointments and 5 categories in total. Note: that will feel tight for a busy shop.
GoDaddy's Online Appointments tool caps total appointments and categories, and past appointments count toward the total.
Workable for a few estimate requests a week, if you clear old appointments.

What does it cost, and what renews higher?

GoDaddy sells both lines. Its Airo builder page lists Starter $9.99, Professional $24.99, and Ultimate $99.99 a month for the first 1-year term, billed annually (checked 10/20/2026). That's $119.88, $299.88, or $1,199.88 for year one. GoDaddy's older Websites + Marketing plan page is still online; check its current prices there. You need Starter or higher to publish, and Professional is the first tier that lists bookings and online payments.

After the first term, GoDaddy lists the Airo plans auto-renewing at $179.88 (Starter), $443.88 (Professional), and $1,799.88 (Ultimate) a year (checked 10/20/2026). So Starter's second year costs $60 more than its first, and Professional's costs $144 more. Check the renewal price in the cart before you commit (see builder vs custom cost over three years).

Airo's first-term price isn't its renewal price. After the first term, GoDaddy lists the Airo plans auto-renewing higher.
Check the renewal price in the cart before you commit, not just the first-term price.
After the first term, GoDaddy lists the Airo plans auto-renewing higher.
Airo year one vs renewal: Starter $119.88 to $179.88, $60 more; Professional $299.88 to $443.88, $144 more.
GoDaddy publishes the Airo renewal prices, so you can see what year two costs before you buy.
So Starter's second year costs $60 more than its first, and Professional's costs $144 more.

Airo uses "a plan-based model. You can start for free and upgrade as your needs grow." Each plan includes credits, and GoDaddy says "Credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over to the next cycle."

Can you add schema and SEO settings?

On Websites + Marketing, more than reviews suggest:

  • You can add custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript through an HTML section. GoDaddy warns that "Embedding code can affect how your entire site functions."
  • GoDaddy's Websites + Marketing help documents an SEO tool under Marketing, and says that to optimize more than 5 pages you go to the builder's SEO Settings.
  • No GoDaddy doc was found for editing robots.txt on the builder. GoDaddy's robots.txt help covers WordPress. That's an absence of a doc, not proof it can't be done.

Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, and ChatGPT needs its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, allowed. Claude's is Claude-SearchBot; xAI doesn't document one for Grok. Those rules don't depend on the platform. What matters more is clear service pages and your towns written out.

Can you take your site with you if you leave?

It depends on the builder:

  • Airo: GoDaddy says you can download "your entire project as a ZIP file at any time" and that "You will need to be on a paid plan to be able to download your code." That's a real plus for ownership. You'd still need to host, maintain, and secure that code yourself.
  • Websites + Marketing: GoDaddy doesn't document a full-site export. Its export help covers store products as a CSV file. Plan on a rebuild if you move.

When is this not the right fit?

The GoDaddy builder isn't the right fit when you take more bookings than the appointment cap allows, need leads routed into job software, want a customer portal, or want page-level control over crawling.

Custom isn't the right fit when a few pages and a contact form do the job, you like having domain, email, and site in one GoDaddy account, and nobody will maintain custom code (more on who should own your domain and hosting). Then the builder is simpler, and a custom build buys you little (see Wix vs Squarespace vs GoDaddy vs custom).

How 3Fold Labs helps

For owners who have outgrown the builder, I build custom sites with a clear page for each service and an easy way to inquire or book. If you're still choosing between builders, see is Wix good enough for a contractor and Squarespace vs a custom website before you switch. You and I agree on the deliverables and cost before any work begins, and if the builder still does the job, staying on it is a fine answer.

When you're ready to compare, here's how I build custom websites for service businesses.

FAQ

Is the GoDaddy website builder good for a contractor?

For a simple site with a form and light booking, yes. Check which builder you're on, and check renewal pricing.

Can I move my GoDaddy website to WordPress?

From Airo, you can download your code on a paid plan. From Websites + Marketing, GoDaddy doesn't document a full export, so expect a rebuild.

Can I add schema to a GoDaddy website?

On Websites + Marketing, GoDaddy documents adding custom code (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) in an HTML section; it doesn't document a schema-specific setting. On Airo, you can edit the generated code.

What is GoDaddy Airo?

GoDaddy's AI site builder. You describe the site, it generates it, and you refine by chat or by hand. It runs on monthly credits that don't roll over.
